Overview

Nexus is a multi-tenant enterprise platform built to unify workflow orchestration, team collaboration, and operational intelligence under a single, extensible product. Lumen Motive architected and delivered the platform end-to-end — from data model to design system.

01

The challenge

The client operated a fragmented stack of legacy tools — project trackers, approval workflows, and reporting dashboards that didn't talk to each other. Teams spent hours each week reconciling data across systems, and leadership had no real-time visibility into operational health.

They needed a single platform that could serve teams of 5 and teams of 500 with the same reliability, while giving administrators granular control over permissions, data isolation, and audit trails.

02

Our approach

We started with a two-week discovery sprint — mapping every workflow, interviewing power users, and auditing the existing data architecture. The goal was to understand not just what the system needed to do, but what would make people actually want to use it.

From there, we designed a modular architecture built around a core event bus. Every action in the system emits a structured event, enabling real-time sync, audit logging, and plugin extensibility without coupling core features to integrations.

The UI was designed with a "progressive disclosure" principle — simple for new users, powerful for experts — using a custom design system built on top of Radix UI primitives.

03

What we built

A fully multi-tenant SaaS platform with workspace isolation, role-based access control (RBAC), and a plugin marketplace. Each tenant gets a dedicated schema in PostgreSQL, ensuring data isolation without the operational overhead of per-tenant databases.

Real-time collaboration is powered by a WebSocket layer built on NestJS Gateways, with Redis pub/sub handling cross-instance message delivery. Users see live updates across the platform with sub-100ms latency.

The admin console gives operators full visibility into tenant health, usage metrics, billing status, and audit logs — all surfaced through a purpose-built internal dashboard.

04

The result

Nexus launched to 340 enterprise tenants within the first six months. The platform replaced four separate tools, reducing the client's software spend by 38% while improving team productivity scores by 2.1× in post-launch surveys.

The plugin architecture has enabled a growing ecosystem of third-party integrations, with 28 connectors live at launch and a partner program now in development.

Lumen Motive didn't just build what we asked for — they challenged our assumptions and delivered something far better. The platform has become the operational backbone of our business.
