Pulse Commerce
Headless commerce engineered for growth.
Pulse is a headless commerce platform built for high-growth DTC brands that have outgrown off-the-shelf solutions. Lumen Motive delivered a conversion-optimised checkout, a flexible subscription engine, and a dynamic pricing system — all built for performance at scale.
The challenge
The client had scaled to $12M ARR on a standard Shopify theme but was hitting hard limits. Their checkout conversion was below industry benchmarks, their subscription logic was held together with third-party apps that conflicted with each other, and their site performance was suffering under the weight of 40+ installed plugins.
They needed a platform that looked and felt like a premium brand, performed like a native app, and gave their team full control over pricing, bundling, and subscription logic without relying on app marketplaces.
Our approach
We audited the existing Shopify store end-to-end — session recordings, heatmaps, checkout funnel data, and customer interviews. The data pointed clearly to three friction points: a cluttered product page, a multi-step checkout that lost users at the payment screen, and a subscription flow that was confusing on mobile.
We chose a headless architecture with Next.js on the frontend and Shopify as the commerce backend, keeping the client's existing product catalogue, inventory, and fulfilment workflows intact while replacing everything the customer sees.
What we built
A headless storefront built on Next.js with edge rendering via Vercel — delivering sub-second page loads globally. Product pages were redesigned from the ground up with a focus on conversion: social proof, variant selection, and add-to-cart all above the fold.
A custom subscription engine built on Stripe Billing, supporting flexible billing intervals, pause/resume, and mid-cycle upgrades. The subscription management portal lets customers self-serve without contacting support.
A dynamic pricing system that supports volume discounts, bundle pricing, and time-limited promotions — all configurable by the marketing team through a custom admin interface, with no code changes required.
The result
Checkout conversion increased by 34% in the first 30 days post-launch. The subscription engine drove $840K in MRR within 90 days, and cart abandonment dropped by 22% following the redesigned checkout flow.
The client's engineering team now ships storefront changes in hours instead of days, and the marketing team runs pricing experiments independently — without a developer in the loop.
"The new platform is everything our old one wasn't — fast, flexible, and built for how we actually work. The checkout redesign alone changed the trajectory of our business.
